Hi,
Currently I've got a Ibanez 2355m (175 copy).

Is anyone interested in posting some Hofner H5 material
on youtube?

Yes, we play differently, all of us, but it might shed some light on how they sound.

I'd like a slightly more L-5 / polytone-ish sound and have to shop from a distance.

Regards,
Ken

Ken, you really do need to try a guitar before you buy. In the past I have bought on the internet - but it was for a back-up bass and and a $500 classical, so if it had all gone wrong it wouldn't have been a big deal. In any case I can fix, or get my guitar tech to fix most things that can go wrong. I did have to pay out $70 to get the classical playing better and over time I've replaced the bridge on the bass - another $100. Would have been better to have bought more wisely in the first place and played these instruments before buying a 'bargain'. I thinks there is some video of Rich playing the H5, so at least you'd guess what it might sound like - but on YouTube most guitars sound pretty thin anyway - it's hardly hi-fi is it?

yeah, ive actually run into the same problem. i have been looking at the hofner h5 on this site. However, its not a guitar that you often see in smaller music shops or even a guitar center. Thats why im kind of wondering about the tone, etc. of this guitar. i dont LIKE not playing a guitar before buying. but, especially with archtops, its hard to find a place with a decent selection. and i have yet to find a place in the area that carries this model. i believe that you are maybe one of only a few that carry it online.

We've sold about 50 H5s on the site. I've had a couple returns because of broken pick guards during shipping. They are just about out of them and they won't be making them again. If you're interested you do have a couple of days to be sure you like it. They a great guitar at twice the price.

I agree with Rich - you just can't get those guitars in Europe at that price - even if you can find one at all!

Hi everyone,

I've just purchased the Hofner Verythin Contemporary - NICE GUITAR. Any recommendations to get a groovy warm mellow jazz guitar sound - strings, guages, amp, settings and effects etc.

For my jazz guitars I've been using lately D'addario 11s
except I replace the 11 with a 13 for a fatter tone on the high E

About tone, I've found if I try to get the best tone with just an amp then add a little verb, delay and slight compression, I still need to tweek the tone a bit with a graphic EQ. I use a Boss GT 3 for all the effects.

Ray Flacke, the coutry player, says he's slowing worked back to just a good guitar and amp - no effects at all - just uses the acoustics of the venue. In his case that's anice Telecaster and an old Gibson valve amp. You'll find a lot of players do that as they get more experienced. What about Joe Pass, who in the end preferred to arrive at a venue and just plug into the venue's PA. How simple and brave is that?
