I bought a new alesis SR18 last year when it looked like we were about to lose our drummer. Drum machines have certainly come on some since my last purchase in 1982. I keep promisong myself I'll really get into this thing but time constraints have stopped me so far.

Well it's the holidays now so I'll be doing exactly that over the next seven weeks and posting my progress on YouTube. But I'm also thinking there may be a 3 DVD set to show how to use one of these bits of technology. You can just use the preset patches; but you can also can programme the drums and it has a bass line to go with it - but it has something like 75 drum kits and 50 bass sounds to play with and 99 preset rhythms (Oh My!) that's where the instruction bit comes in. I feel overwhelmed by what this thing could do.

Does anyone know if someone has done this sort of DVD course already? Everyone I speak to thinks it's a great idea - it's just difficult to apply yourself to it as a big project. But, if I can show people how to crack open the capability of one of these bits of kit - to use it for gigging and recording - and I'm not a young sprog - well everyone should feel confident they can do it as well.

Any ideas guys? Any pointers to someone else trying to do this? Could technology instructional DVDs be something we could offer within the Guitar College 'brand'? There must be lots of guys who don't really know how to get the best from their multi-effects, amps (especially the digital ones), and mixer/recording gear.

I'm going to give it a try with the SR18 because I need to learn the system so I can gig with it this autum. But any other ideas guys?

Hi Chris,
I used drum machines a lot about 10 or 15 years ago for jamming and demos. I used the old Alesis HR-16 and HR-16 B machines. At that time Alesis had a video out on how to use the machines. It was very helpful. You might want to check with Alesis and see what they have.
