Hello Rich,

Are there any "Walking Bass Line/Comping Lessons" in the future? Back in Feb '10 I was invited to play a set with another guitarist and I was embarrassed to say the least when it came time for him to solo because all I did was comp while he supported me with comping/bass lines. I purchased the walking bass line for rhythm changes and have made it my daily warm up.

thanks Rich for sharing your knowledge,
Carlo

Hi Carlo,
I think we have a walking bass line video lesson either on Guitar College Video Magazine or in the 99 Centdownloads site. If you want to do some practicing in the mean time, I have a downloadable Pdf file on walking bass lines for jazz guitar on the lesson page on my web site (www.ericelias.net). It gives some basic patterns as well as application to a jazz blues and is in tab and notation.

Check out the Ed Friedland book on the subject. (Walking Basslines) It was his dissertation for a college degree, but it's a very easy way to build up how to do walking on the bass starting with chromatic approach notes, then diatonic passing tones and approach notes with just roots and fifths and then onto full chords and more complex lines. (But you'll need to read a bit - no TAB in his books.)

There's follow up books as well - but again you really need to read music to study the books. Good idea to be able to read anyway so you could force yourself into it with these books.

When that's all done you might like to try the Gary Willis one on Harmony. (He even covers 5 string and 6 string throughout the book.) If you email me I'll give you a study plan for cracking walking bass. Have you done erics bass lessons first? You need a good foundation or you'll never get the 'walking' thing.
