Hi Tony,
Welcome. The forum can be a little quite at times, but hopefully, you'll find some people to work along with you and help keep accountable with your practice goals. I think that can be very valuable. Feel free to ask questions as you work through the material. And thanks for purchasing some of my books as well. Best wishes.

Eric,

The books of yours that I purchased are:

The Art of Arranging for Solo Jazz Guitar
Chord, Arpeggio, and Position Studies for Jazz Guitar
The Fundamentals of Jazz Guitar (both vol 1 and 2)

In addition, I have collected the Howard Morgan books and was fortunate enough to have gotten all the various tapes (which I have converted to MP3) that went with them over the years:

Preparations: An Introduction to Fingerstyle Playing
Concepts: Arranging for Fingerstyle Guitar
Great Popular Favorites for the Fingerstyle Guitarist
Jazz & Popular Standards for the Fingerstyle Guitarist
Solo Guitar Insights, Arranging Techniques & Classic Jazz Standards
10 From Guitar Player
Through Chord-Melody and Beyond

Some of those books are no longer available and the tapes have been out of print for many years. I think the only recording available among these books is the for Through Chord-Melody and Beyond because it is a relatively new book that comes with the CD. But there is nothing quite like the Howard Morgen materials on general fingerstyle arranging anywhere else. The Guitar College materials are a great preparation to get the most out of that material.

I have been waiting for the right time in my life to be able to dig into these. I am confident that I can go it alone, and am fully prepared to do so. In fact, the progress I am making alone with the Guitar College materials is very good, especially because I have already been playing for a long time and know much of the material in one form or another already. For a person in my situation, going back over the basics in a cohesive manner as Rich presents it is very valuable in preparing to go beyond what I already know (and in filling in the holes that inevitable when self-teaching without a guide such as Guitar College over the years). If I were a beginner, I am sure that I would need a frequent "helping hand", especially at the early stages, though knowing help such as yourself is available is something I welcome. :)

I feel that, because of how powerful being in a study group was in college, it would be a real win-win situation for others here who are serious about working through the Guitar College program. But if nobody steps up, I will still do just fine because I have been around long enough to know that if I am to really be satisfied with my relationship to the guitar, it will be necessary for me to go through a program like Guitar College. Tony Robbins used to talk about motivating ourselves by making it more painful in our minds to not do something than to do it. That is how I see the long term prospects for myself with Guitar College. Here is an opportunity to get the schooling I always wanted - without having to "drop out" from life for 4 years.

Hi Tony,
You have an excellent library and resources. It sounds like you are really motivated too. For years I collected guitar books and rarely got into them. I finally told myslef that I wouldn't get another book or video until I finished working through one first. That really helped me push through the material. It sounds like you are already working through the material that you have.
I like the study group idea. I hope a few others step up. It's motivating.
I like that Tony Robbins quote. I have been using that same logic to make myself work out/exercise.
I worked through all of Rich's courses a few years back. Feel free to ask questions as you work through the courses.

Over the years, I have gotten into various books in my collection and gotten what I needed as I went, but that results in disjointed learning even though I got good stuff from them.

I don't really understand why this forum is so quiet. I would think that, considering how demanding Guitar College materials are, that people would be here asking questions and discussing what they are working on. Oh well. As I said, I am doing fine on my own because I have been playing long enough to figure out how to proceed and much of the early parts are more of a review for me.

I will look here once in a while, but won't be a "regular" if there isn't enough activity to warrant it. I appreciate your interest and this discussion.

Thanks,

Tony

Hi Tony,
Yes, it seems like this board has various bursts of activity. I'm not sure why it has quiet times though. I agree, it should be busy given the demand for the courses and videos. Keep checking and hopefully you can find some interest. I try to check it daily.

Thanks Eric. I will continue to check back. I have a good forward motion going on now with the course and am making good progress. Also, a friend just got the download version of the Starter Pack, so I am sure he and I will keep in touch.

I am curious why I no longer see the Serious Student Pack, which is what I bought. To me, that was the way to get the entire course and not get confused by the other offerings which are really supplements to the core studies. Maybe I am just not looking in the right place on the site? When I got it, it was books and CDs and the original supplemental DVD.

Hi Tony,
I'm not sure why that isn't offered currently. Rich may change things around and offer the courses in a different package now. Sometimes he chimes in on the discussion board too, so maybe he'll add some info here.
I'm glad that one of your friends is also doing the courses, By the way, which course or material are you working on right now?

Eric:

I am working through from the beginning - Theory and Technique 1, Rhythm Guitar, and Theory for the Road.

Before starting into it, I listened over and over to what Rich said on the suplemental DVD and read several times the start pack section in the 48 Licks book to make sure I was REALLY hearing what he said, rather than hearing it through my "filters" based on my own experience with the guitar. I believe that one must approach this course work with a "beginner's mind" and go through the whole thing without preconceived notions. To do that honestly, makes the work go much more smoothly and also changes how I view the guitar. I am making very good progress because of previous familiarity with the material.

I am not skipping over anything, thinking that old "been there, done that", but instead it is much easier to comprehend and memorize the materials because I am already familiar with much of it. But I am definitely seeing all of it from a different perspective. I see these early stages as being crucial to my later success as the material becomes more challenging. Forming the correct attitude and study habits now, while at the same time understanding Rich's perspective goes a long way toward working WITH him as he teaches, rather than second-guessing and coming up short later on.

Excellent Tony. That's a great way to procede through the material. You'll gain so much from just going through everything. Your patience will pay off.
