Greetings all,

I do a good bit of solo church performances, similar to Rich's At Peace album. I've been playing on a classical guitar, but my aging hands don't handle the wide neck as well as they used to.

I'm going to switch to a model with a narrower neck, but wanted to get some input from other players before heading to a music store to subject myself to the tender mercies of the salesman.

Some of the models I've looked at have a fretboard that is radiused rather than flat. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to this when playing this style of music?

Do you have any suggestions for brands/models that sound decent for under $2k? I'd prefer an acoustic/electric, but am willing to listen to arguments for alternatives.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Dave,
I have alot of nylon string students and I play nylon string myself. Over the years I've played quite a few nylon strings with different necks. Many companies are offering more narrow necks now (Godin, Taylor, Cordoba and I think Takamine too--if I'm not mistaken). The radius of a nylon string fingerboard might cause some buzzing since the nylon strings are thicker and have a bigger elipse when they vibrate. The fingerboards that I have seen that are radiused are not too radiused though (not like a stratocaster). If they don't buzz then the radius is probably fine. The thinner necks are comfortable for a lot of players. Try as many as you can. The Taylors and COrdobas that I've played are really nice and are under 2K. The Godins are more electric than acoustic, but are really nice too (closer to 1K than 2K as well).

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Eric,

That helps a lot. Time to start actually touching them now.

Well for $2k Dave you could get a top guitar made for you in these parts. I had a very nive version of a J45 steel string made for me by Tom Waghorn in Bristol, UK - so I think a high quality nylon strung guitar could be made for less than $2k to exactly the specifications you want. IN the meantime check out a $500 stand by from Yamaha - the NTX700 - narrower neck, radiused fretboard, nylon strung and with a piezo PU in the bridge (or not). You might want to forgo the custom model or change what you think you want after pplaying one of these - and they are cheap enough to not have to worry about gigging it and leaving it on a stand in the breaks.
