I guess I've been teaching fulltime now since late in 2002. That's 8 years of teaching. I thought when I started that by now I'd be an ace player at all styles AND at a high level with all of them. Not so.

I think what happens when you're teaching is that you are playing mostly at a very basic level - so you get to practice scales, arpeggios (simple ones), chords (simple ones) and some melodies all the time but really never much stretch yourself. It's time I looked after my own needs better. Next year I want to play out more in a few styles and I have some ideas for shows and themes I want to work on.

So here's the deal - it's back to basics. Go through all the relevent GC material AGAIN and make sure that all the basics are covered whilst learning a new repetoire in a few styles. I'll chart my progress here and my own website.

And would anyone like to join me on the journey? Back to basics, on through the intermediate stuff and onto new highs and getting this stuff out there in front of paying customers. I hope to cover what I learn about getting organised, practice regimes, getting past blocks, source material (what's here and what needs developing perhaps), and lastly finding the work and landing the gigs.

Let me know if you're up for a journey into better playing (and earning!) And it won't cost you a bean - it's all upside.

Hey Chris,
Great idea. I'm doing a lot of transcribing currently, but I have done alot of review of my GC courses in the past. I've also used them as references with my teaching too, Keep up the good work.
